WEST MILFORD NEWCOMERS CLUB NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 2007

SEPTEMBER’S MESSAGE: As we begin our Club’s 21st year, I’d like to welcome you all back for another year of friendship and fun. That this club has been in existence for 21 years is a testament to the needs it fills as well as the enjoyment it brings to its members. I know the new Board has lots of great ideas up its sleeve for interesting and fun programs. Join in on our many activities and make some lasting friendships through the coming year!
                         Merrilee McKittrick, Editor

OUR NEW BOARD: The members of this year’s Board are: Blanche DeSimone – President; Kathy Maguire – Vice President, Diane Brewer – Treasurer and Mary Loudin – Secretary.

FIRST MEETING: Our first meeting of the Club year will be held on Tuesday, September 11th, at the West Milford Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Come and socialize beginning at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and refreshments supplied by the Club. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. At this meeting, we can catch up with each other after the summer and discuss our ideas and plans for the coming year.

Do you have pictures from your summer vacation or any other subject that you want to showcase in a special way? Our speaker for the September meeting is Tracy Bakunas who will lead us in making a page for a scrapbook. Please bring five 4” x 6” photographs of one theme or occasion to scrapbook with. If you don’t want to bring your actual photos, bring color photocopies of them. Attendees will make a lovely two-page scrapbook spread that they can take home with them and add to any 12” x 12” scrapbook on the market. Tracy will be teaching design concepts that you can use at home to preserve your memories. Many different stamp sets will be provided to customize your pages as well as all other supplies needed. There is no cost to you for this project.

BABYSITTING: On-site babysitting is provided for $5 per family at our meetings. Please pay our treasurer, Diane Brewer, when you come in. Please pack snacks and drinks for your own children and label their belongings, especially if they have their own drinking cup.

DUES: Our yearly dues will remain at $20. If you are presently a member, please pay your dues by our second meeting which will be on October 9th. If you cannot attend either of our first two meetings, please mail your dues to the West Milford Newcomers Club, P.O. Box 635, Hewitt, NJ 07421. If we do not receive your dues by the end of October, we will assume you are not rejoining the Club and remove you from our directory, mailing list and e-mail lists. Women new to the Club but interested in finding out more about us, may attend two meetings as well as our other activities before joining.

E-MAILED MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS: Each month, we send the current month’s newsletter and calendar by e-mail to all our members for you to print out and refer to. If you unable to receive this newsletter by e-mail or if you just prefer to receive it by U.S. Mail, please let Merrilee know. Also, the current month’s newsletter and calendar can always be accessed at our website, www.newcomersclub.net.

NEW ITEM IN NEWSLETTER: The Editor would like to invite a different member each month to contribute a paragraph or so to the newsletter in which they talk about what the club has meant to them and/or any particular experiences with the club that have made lasting memories. For example, many touching and funny stories were told at our 20th Anniversary Celebration that would be worth retelling for those who didn’t attend. I’m sure each one of us has had some special moments with the club worth sharing.

ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS: As we have been doing for several years, we will include the advertising of our members’ or their husbands’ businesses in our Membership Directory. If you know of any other business that may want to advertise in our Directory, they are welcome to do so. Ads will run $25 for a half page and can be made from a business card or run for two lines for $15. Please contact Maria Eriksson, who will prepare our new directory, to place an ad. Here’s a big THANK YOU to Maria for volunteering to take on the production of our Directory once again.

RAFFLE: Members are encouraged to bring items to be raffled off each month. You can clear out the clutter from your house and help the Club at the same time. The money earned from these raffles goes into our Club treasury to help defray expenses.

SUNSHINE SQUAD: Having friends help you out during a bad time can mean a lot. We would like to revive this club function that will help out members during such times by delivering dinners to them after surgery, giving birth or a serious illness. If you would like to chair this club service, please let Blanche know. Also, people who sign up to be called on to prepare these meals are always appreciated.

HAPPY SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS TO: Sylvie Demers – 9/20, Claire Gray – 9/12, Mary Loudin – 9/8.

CONGRATULATIONS to Wendy and Chris Rosica on the birth of their son, Cole Edmund, who joins his sister Natalie. Cole was born on June 29th, weighing 7 lbs. 7 oz.

MANY THANKS to Debra Manfredonio for agreeing to be our Hospitality Goddess again this year. Volunteers will be needed to bake or bring some food item to future meetings.

CALENDAR: Each month, you will receive a calendar along with your Newsletter showing our activities for the month. This can be placed where you can make easy reference to it. Starting next month, we will also be listing on our calendar and at the end of our club activities other events in the area that may be of interest to our members. THANK YOU to Cyndy Taylor who will produce these calendars.

ACTIVITIES UPDATE:

  • WALKING IN WAYWAYANDA: Mary Loudin. This group will continue walking every Monday at Waywayanda State Park, meeting at the entrance parking lot at 11 a.m. unless there is inclement weather. Children and dogs are welcome. Park regulations require that dogs be on leashes. You do not have to call Mary if you are walking, just show up by 11 a.m.

  • LET’S DO LUNCH: Merrilee McKittrick. Enjoy a shopping and dining experience! This group will be going to lunch on the LAST Wednesday of the month, September 26th, meeting at the restaurant at 12:30 p.m. They will be going to the Calico Rose Café in Hamburg. They have homemade soups, unique sandwiches, quiches and salads as well as great desserts. You can get your own individual pot of tea. This Café is located at the Merry Go Round Gift Shop where you can browse for home or gift items. Please let Merrilee know if you plan to attend so she can make reservations.

  • HIKER BABES: Debra Manfredonio. This group will be hiking every Thursday, meeting at 1 p.m., at various levels of difficulty and to different destinations. Contact Debra if you would like to be notified of this group’s plans each week.

  • A NOVEL GROUP: Debbie Maynard. The next meeting of this group will be on Wednesday, September 12th, at 8 p.m. at the home of Janet Kirk. They will be discussing “The History of Love” by Nicole Krauss. If you are already a member of this group, please call the hostess if you are NOT attending. Guests trying it out are always welcome.

  • BREAKFAST BUNCH: Cindy Forrest. This group meets on the last Thursday of the month. For September, the group will be meeting on Thursday, September 27th, at the Oasis Diner at the Shoprite Center at 9:45 a.m. You do not have to contact Cindy if you are attending, just show up at the diner. The group can meet more often if enough attendees desire it.

  • SUPPER CLUB: Renee Weiss. This group will not meet in September but will start up again in October. For October, Renee is thinking of having it at “Wine in the Woods.” A back room can be reserved and those attending can bring their “tapas” as well as their husbands or significant other if they wish. Wine, beer or spirits can be purchased there. Further details will be in the October Newsletter.

  • MOVIE NIGHT: Maria-Elena Grant. This group will also start in October. Movie Night will be on the first Tuesday of each month, attending a showing that starts after 7 p.m. but before 8 p.m. at either the Abbey Cinema in West Milford or the Clearview Cinema in Kinnelon. Selections will be based on show times, variety and popularity. Approximately one week prior to Movie Night, Maria Elena will send out an e-mail announcement to the Club, letting everyone know the title, theatre and show time. If possible, a link that contains a synopsis will be provided. Anyone interested in attending, please reply back to Maria Elena and plan to meet up with everyone at the ticket counter of the theatre 10 minutes before show time.

  • OTHER ACTIVITIES: New groups are always forming around the interests of our members. If there is any other activity you would like to see implemented, please feel free to bring it up. If you have a special interest or talent, perhaps you would like to share it with others in a small activity group. Once popular groups, that just need a chairman and a few interested people such as Ladies Night Out, Dinner Group or Children’s Playgroup can be revived. New ideas are ALWAYS welcome!
