WEST MILFORD NEWCOMERS CLUB NEWSLETTER

September 2006

PRESIDENT: Merrilee McKittrick

EDITOR: Merrilee McKittrick

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:  Twenty years ago this September, the first meeting of the West Milford Newcomers Club was held at the Hillcrest Center. I had recently stopped working and hardly knew anyone in town. Gathering my courage, I entered that first meeting and have been a part of the Newcomers Club ever since. When I think of all the dear friends I have made, all the wonderful people I have met, all the fun activities I have enjoyed and all the laughs I have shared through this Club, I know my life would have been so much poorer without it. Over these twenty years, I have watched the Club enrich the lives of countless women as it did for me. I encourage all of you to participate as much as you can in all the Club’s many offerings. The more involved you get, the more you will feel at home here. My wish for you is that you will find through the Club the love, friendship, and fun that I have been privileged to experience. I am looking forward to sharing this very special 20th Anniversary year with you.
                         Merrilee McKittrick, President

FIRST MEETING: Our first meeting of the Club year will be held on Tuesday, September 12th, at the West Milford Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Come and socialize beginning at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and refreshments supplied by the Club. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. At this meeting, we can catch up with each other after the summer and discuss our ideas and plans for the coming year. Both before and after the business part of our meeting, we will have a fun “getting to know you” game to help us learn further tidbits about each other as a great way to start the year.

BABYSITTING:On site babysitting is provided for $5 per family at our meetings. Please pay our treasurer, Diane Brewer, when you come in. Please pack snacks and drinks for your own children and label their belongings, especially if they have their own drinking cup.

DUES: Our yearly dues will remain at $20. If you are presently a member, please pay your dues by our second meeting which will be on October 10th. If you cannot attend either of our first two meetings, please mail your dues to the West Milford Newcomers Club, P.O. Box 635, Hewitt, NJ 07421. If we do not receive your dues by the end of October, we will assume you are not rejoining the Club and remove you from our directory, mailing list and e-mail lists. Women new to the Club but interested in finding out more about us, may attend two meetings as well as our other activities before joining.

E-MAILED MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS: Each month, we send the current month’s newsletter and calendar by e-mail to all our members for you to print out and refer to. We have simplified the graphics this year, in the hope that more of you will be able to receive it this way. If you unable to receive this newsletter by e-mail or if you just prefer to receive it by U.S. Mail, please let Merrilee know. Also, the current month’s newsletter and calendar can always be accessed at our website, www.newcomersclub.net.

ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS: As we have been doing for several years, we will include the advertising of our members’ or their husbands’ businesses in our Membership Directory. If you know of any other business that may want to advertise in our Directory, they are welcome to do so. Ads will run $25 for a half page and can be made from a business card or run for two lines for $15. Please contact Maria Eriksson, who will prepare our new directory, to place an ad. Here’s a big THANK YOU to Maria for volunteering to take on the production of our Directory.

RAFFLE: Members are encouraged to bring items to be raffled off each month. You can clear out the clutter from your house and help the Club at the same time. The money earned from these raffles goes into our Club treasury to help defray expenses.

SUNSHINE SQUAD: Having friends help you out during a bad time can mean a lot. We are still looking for someone to chair this group that will help out members during such times by making and delivering dinners to them after surgery, giving birth or a serious illness. If you would like to chair this service, please contact Claire who will tell you what is involved. Also, people who sign up to be called on to prepare these meals are always appreciated.

HAPPY SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS TO: Sylvie Demers – 9/20, Claire Gray – 9/12, Mary Loudin – 9/8 and Paula Volpe – 9/29.

                        *** NEWCOMERS 20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY ***

Mark your calendars for Thursday evening, October 26th, as we celebrate the West Milford Newcomers Club’s 20th Anniversary. Join former, present and future Newcomers Club members at Momento’s Restaurant where we will enjoy some good food while we catch up with friends, reminisce about the history of the club with the help of a slide show of old pictures and also look towards the future. That this is a newcomers club which has been in existence for 20 years is, in itself, pretty remarkable but the personal accounts from our members of what this club has meant to them over the years is truly heartwarming.

We will have a private room where there will be a buffet of salad, eggplant rollatini, penne with vodka sauce, fried calamari and spiedini (fried Italian bread with mozzarella & anchovy sauce) along with dessert and coffee, as well as a cash bar. The cost per person is $20, which includes tax and tip. Come celebrate this wonderful Club and the friendships and sense of community it fosters.

  • COMPUTER GROUP (New): Jody Goldenberg. Stumped on the basics of operating your Windows PC computer? Join this group for its first session on Tuesday, September 19th, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Jody’s house. This group will be very task oriented. You will learn the way to make something happen with the smallest amount of back information necessary for it to work for you. The first session will offer a quick overview of Windows and then concentrate on working with files: finding, copying, deleting, creating folders. Please contact Jody if you plan to attend.

  • CHILD’S PLAY PLAYGROUP: Wendy Rosica. Wendy is now chairing this group which will start up in October. She is looking for input as to who is interested in attending and a good day and time. Please feel free to contact her with your comments. More information will be in the October Newsletter.

  • WALKING IN WAYWAYANDA: Mary Loudin. Please note that this group has a new chairman and change of time. Starting on the Monday after Labor Day, this group will be walking every Monday at Waywayanda State Park, meeting at the parking lot down by the lake at 11 a.m. unless there is inclement weather. Children and dogs are welcome. Park regulations require that dogs be on leashes. You do not have to call Mary if you are walking, just show up by 11 a.m.

  • LET’S DO LUNCH: Merrilee McKittrick. This group will be going to lunch on Wednesday, September 20th, meeting at the restaurant at 12:30 p.m. This month they will be going up to Sugar Loaf, NY for lunch at the Barnsider Restaurant which has a varied American menu. After lunch, everyone can browse in the many great shops along the main street. Please let Merrilee know if you plan to attend so she can make reservations.

  • HIKER BABES: Debra Manfredonio. This group will be hiking every Thursday, meeting at 1 p.m., at various levels of difficulty and to different destinations. Contact Debra if you would like to be notified of this group’s plans each week

  • A NOVEL GROUP: Debbie Maynard. The next meeting of this group will be on Wednesday, September 13th, at 8 p.m. at the home of Sandy Maciel. They will be discussing “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neal Hurston. If you are already a member of this group, please call the hostess if you are NOT attending. Guests trying it out are always welcome.

  • ON-LINE SKYPE BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP: For those members who wish they could participate in our Book Club discussions but cannot get out at night, our Book Club chairman, Debbie Maynard, and our webmaster, Jody Goldenberg, have put together a “novel” idea. Using Skype software, as well a microphone and speakers or headsets with your computer, you can participate in a live discussion of the book with other members. This month this will take place on Thursday, September 14th, at 8 p.m. They will be discussing “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neal Hurston. This is a fun, easy and very relaxed way to talk about the book from the comfort of your own home. If you need instructions on how to do this, please contact either Debbie or Jody.

  • BREAKFAST BUNCH: Cindy Forrest. Cindy is now chairing this group which will be meeting on the last Thursday of the month. For September, the group will be meeting on Thursday, September 28th, at the Oasis Diner at the Shoprite Center at 9:45 a.m. You do not have to contact Cindy if you are attending, just show up at the diner. The group can meet more often if enough attendees desire it.

  • SUPPER CLUB: Renee Weiss. Renee has take over chairing this group which will meet for the first time this club year in October. This group usually meets on a Saturday evening at someone’s home and includes husbands or significant others if you want to bring them. Attendees are asked to bring an appetizer, main dish, side dish or dessert. More information will be in the October newsletter.

  • MOVIE NIGHT: Maria-Elena Grant. Movie Night will be on the first Tuesday of each month, attending a showing that starts after 7 p.m. but before 8 p.m. at either the Abbey Cinema in West Milford or the Clearview Cinema in Kinnelon. Selections will be based on show times, variety and popularity. Approximately one week prior to Movie Night, Maria-Elena will send out an e-mail announcement to the Club, letting everyone know the title, theatre and show time. If possible, a link that contains a synopsis will be provided. Anyone interested in attending, please reply back to Maria-Elena and plan to meet up with everyone at the ticket counter of the theatre 10 minutes before show time.

  • LADIES NIGHT OUT: Annette will not be able to chair this group this year. It usually met on a Friday night at a local restaurant. If anyone else would like to see this group continue, please let me know. It can be an occasional outing instead of a monthly one if that works better for you.

  • FIELD TRIPS FOR TOTS: Again, Annette will not be able to chair this group this club year. If anyone else would like to take this group over, please let me know.

  • OTHER ACTIVITIES: New groups are always forming around the interests of our members. If there is any other activity you would like to see implemented, please feel free to bring it up. If you have a special interest or talent, perhaps you would like to share it with others in a small activity group. New ideas are ALWAYS welcome!
